THE DISCOVERY, THE FRUIT OF CHANCE

It's the 1980s, and Dr. Jacob Harich is working in his garden when he notices that grapefruit seeds do not decompose in compost. Surprised, he was the first to wonder why bacteria and fungi did not alter the grapefruit seeds, while all other organic matter decomposed rapidly under the influence of the heat and humidity that prevail in Florida.

As a doctor and physicist, Dr. Harich was well placed to investigate this phenomenon. Some time later, his studies revealed that substances contained in grapefruit seeds did not repel microorganisms, but destroyed them. By chance, his fabulous discovery was announced as the first "natural antibiotic."

THE DOUBT

News of his discovery spread quickly, and since he had not patented it, many manufacturers rushed to produce grapefruit-based products in every conceivable form.

Other scientists then sounded the alarm. The vast majority of products on the market contain not only seed extract, but the entire fruit reduced to powder. Worse still, chemical preservatives such as benzethonium chloride are used for their antibacterial properties. Doubts and scandals then shook the scientific world, until new studies proved once again that pure, isolated grapefruit seed extract does indeed have a destructive effect on a large number of microorganisms, such as yeasts, fungi, and bacteria. The question remains of how to treat the seeds in order to extract their natural active ingredients.

A PURE PRODUCT, OBTAINED WITH PATIENCE, GOOD FOR THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

Only a few types of grapefruit contain sufficient quantities of antibacterial compounds.

Among these, we have selected Citrus grandis, whose seeds are shipped to us in Switzerland immediately after the fruit is harvested. Unlike many preparations still available on the market, which contain a variety of ingredients, Sekoya uses only seeds with the highest concentration of citrus bioflavonoids, naringin, and glycosides.

And in order to extract and preserve the integrity of these natural active ingredients, we have opted for a slow process based on percolation, which limits the amount of glycerin and increases the amount of bioflavonoids.

It takes more than 12 hours to obtain a liquid extract rich in natural active ingredients, to which we add a little vitamin C from the fruit and essential oil from Citrus paradisi grapefruit.

A WIDE RANGE OF ACTIONS

The Pasteur Institute and the Southern Research Institute have shown that a pure grapefruit seed extract, such as Sekoya, has a broad spectrum of action. These institutions have demonstrated positive effects in treating digestive disorders linked to the presence of bacteria, relieving infections that irritate the throat and obstruct nasal breathing, and combating oral infections.

At Sekoya, we designed and developed this product for internal use, with the primary goal of supporting the immune system.
